Hua Mend is a collaborative brand identity and product design project built around promoting material sustainability in a U.S. market while embracing a piece of Taiwanese culture. With designs inspired by traditional Taiwanese 窗花 (chuang hua), or window flowers, users are able to create, order, and construct custom furniture repair pieces that are made out of recycled materials, can be easily installed in seconds from the comfort of their home.

Project Overview

Well-loved furniture is prone to breakage over time and repairs can be costly and difficult to manage. Many Americans resort to throwing away old items and repurchasing new ones, resulting in additional waste and spending. Hua Mend creates a space for sustainability by empowering Americans to repurpose their old furniture while simultaneously giving use to recycled materials. Each piece is made entirely with recycled American aluminum, one of the most commonly wasted materials, making repairs easily installed, structurally sound, and easily recycled even after the products lifetime due to its low carbon emissions and one-material nature.

As a Web Design and Graphic Designer, I designed the site on Figma and chose typefaces, color palettes, layout design, and focused on creating the most visually-appealing and relaxing user experience whilst using our service.

Challenge

Combining cross-cultural aspects of both American and Taiwanese culture proved to be a challenge when tying it in with the sustainable nature of the product. Since Taiwanese 窗花 (chuang hua) are built to be beautiful and strong enough to keep intruders out, adding their beauty and importance to Taiwan's history into the repair system completed the entire concept and allowed the circular economy design to be brought to life fully.

Results

Combining recycled low-cost materials, maintenance of pre-existing items, easy order and installation, and beautiful design, Hua Mend is a crucial product to an American market that is currently incapable of partaking in this level of product sustainability. A user simply has to head to the website to order, receive their items, and spend a few minutes attaching it to their furniture to complete an aesthetically built and inexpensive repair.
